Four reasons to choose PHPRunner

PHPRunner vs Alpha Anywhere: which fits your application?

PHPRunner and Alpha Anywhere can both build business applications around databases. Alpha Anywhere also provides substantial mobile and offline capabilities. For a connected browser-based database application, however, PHPRunner offers a simpler and substantially less expensive development and deployment model.

PHPRunner runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux, deploys the completed application to an ordinary compatible PHP server, and does not require a separately licensed PHPRunner application server in production.

Quick answer: Choose PHPRunner when you are building a connected browser-based database application, want to develop on Windows, macOS, or Linux, prefer deployment to an ordinary compatible web server, and do not want a separate annual application-server license.

1. Develop on Windows, macOS, or Linux

PHPRunner provides current development builds for Windows, macOS, and Linux. A developer can work in the operating system already used by the team without adding a Windows virtual machine solely for the application builder.

Alpha Anywhere is a Windows development application. Its current FAQ directs Mac users to Windows through Parallels, another virtualization method, or Remote Desktop to a Windows computer.

Why this matters: a Mac or Linux developer can run PHPRunner directly instead of maintaining a separate Windows environment for development.

2. Deploy without a separately licensed application server

PHPRunner builds a complete web application for deployment to a compatible PHP server such as IIS or Apache. PHPRunner itself is not installed on the production server, and the application does not require a PHPRunner-specific server runtime license.

Alpha Anywhere offers Alpha Cloud and self-hosted deployment. Its current pricing states that building and deploying an Alpha Anywhere web or mobile solution requires both a Developer license and an appropriately featured Application Server license. The published on-premise Application Server price is $5,000 per year; Application Server for IIS is $10,000 per year.

Why this matters: an organization that already operates a compatible PHP web server can deploy PHPRunner applications into that environment without adding an annual application-server product to the architecture.

3. Spend less on software licensing for a self-hosted database application

For one developer and a self-hosted application that connects directly to a relational database, Alpha Anywhere currently lists its Developer license at $999 per year and its standard Application Server at $5,000 per year. That is about $6,000 for the first year and about $12,000 over two years at the current prices.

PHPRunner Enterprise costs $999 initially. The current maintenance renewal for the following year is $399, making the two-year software cost about $1,400 for one developer. That is about $10,600 less over two years in this specific software-licensing comparison.

Both choices still require appropriate hosting, database infrastructure, backups, monitoring, security, and staff time. Alpha Cloud has different pricing and includes managed hosting services, so it should be compared with the complete cost of operating the selected PHPRunner environment.

Why this matters: for an ordinary connected database web application, PHPRunner leaves much more of the budget available for development, hosting, and ongoing application improvement.

4. Add enterprise sign-in without moving to a server package priced for IIS

PHPRunner Enterprise includes Active Directory, Azure AD, Okta, SAML, and OpenID authentication options. These capabilities are part of the published $999 Enterprise developer edition, while the finished application can still run on the compatible server selected by the customer.

Alpha Anywhere provides a security framework and several authentication options. Its pricing page specifically lists Active Directory authentication with the $10,000-per-year Application Server for IIS package. Buyers should confirm the exact Alpha server package required for their identity provider and deployment.

Why this matters: an organization using a common enterprise identity provider can evaluate PHPRunner Enterprise without first committing to a separate high-priced IIS application-server license.

When Alpha Anywhere may still be the better choice

Alpha Anywhere deserves evaluation when offline mobile data collection, conflict resolution, device features, mobile packaging, Alpha Launch, or Alpha Cloud are central requirements. PHPRunner creates responsive browser-based applications, but that is not the same as Alpha Anywhere’s documented offline mobile architecture.

Choose PHPRunner when the primary requirement is a connected browser-based application around relational data and the organization values conventional web deployment, cross-platform development, and lower software licensing.

Why choose PHPRunner?

PHPRunner provides a focused route from an existing database to forms, search, reports, dashboards, authentication, permissions, and custom business logic. Its development license and ordinary-server deployment model are especially compelling when the project does not need a specialized offline mobile platform.

Use the trial to build one representative workflow, configure two user roles, add a business rule, and deploy it to the actual PHP server you plan to use. Compare the complete result and two-year operating plan, not only the first screen in each builder.
