Five reasons to choose PHPRunner

PHPRunner vs PHPMaker: which should you choose?

PHPRunner and PHPMaker can both generate forms, reports, security features and database-driven pages. If you are comparing them before a purchase, the useful question is not whether their feature lists overlap. It is what PHPRunner gives you beyond that common foundation.

PHPRunner combines visual page design, flexible application data sources, a shared team-development edition, development builds for three operating systems, and a full year of support and upgrades. These advantages matter at different stages of a project, from building the first page to maintaining the application with a team.

Quick answer: Choose PHPRunner when you want to design application pages visually, use built-in connections to external APIs, support simultaneous team development, develop on Windows, macOS or Linux, and receive a full year of support and upgrades.

1. Design application pages visually

PHPRunner's Page Designer lets you work directly with the page. You can drag and drop fields, insert text, buttons and code snippets, create tabs and sections, change the grid, and edit the properties of pages, cells and individual elements. The same visual workflow applies to List, Add, Edit, View, Print, Search, Export and Import pages.

PHPMaker provides extensive field settings, drag-and-drop field ordering and configured tabs or accordions. For a more customized page arrangement, its documentation uses Custom Templates with template tags and client-side template markup. PHPRunner therefore gives developers a more direct way to shape the finished page before layout templates become necessary.

Why this matters: routine interface changes remain visible in the project. Developers can reserve events and custom code for business rules instead of using them to construct the page layout.

2. Build pages around more than database tables

Business applications increasingly combine relational data with external services and calculated or code-supplied datasets. PHPRunner provides three project-level data-source options for these cases:

  • REST Views connect to external APIs, map response fields and build ordinary application pages around the returned data. Connection options include API keys, Basic HTTP, OAuth 2.0 and custom authentication.
  • SQL Views use nonstandard SQL queries or stored-procedure results as application data sources.
  • Code Views supply rows through PHP code, including arrays or filesystem data, while retaining application features such as search, filters and pagination.

PHPMaker supports database tables, database views, Linked Tables and APIs exposed by the generated application. Its current documentation does not describe equivalent configurable external REST-backed or code-backed data-source objects. Those tasks may still be implemented with custom code, but PHPRunner brings them into the normal application-building workflow.

Why this matters: an application can present data from a business API, a stored procedure or a custom dataset using the same pages, security and interface tools used for database records.

3. Let several developers work in one shared project

PHPRunner MultiDev is designed for simultaneous work on a shared project. Team members can divide the application and work in parallel without passing project files between computers.

PHPMaker documents a GitHub synchronization workflow for sharing projects. Its instructions recommend dividing responsibility to reduce conflicts and using an external editor when conflicts must be resolved. That is useful source-control integration, but it is different from a development edition built specifically for concurrent project editing.

Why this matters: a development team can work on separate parts of the application at the same time without making manual project-file merging part of its normal workflow. This advantage applies specifically to PHPRunner MultiDev Edition.

4. Develop on Windows, macOS or Linux

PHPRunner provides current development builds for Windows, macOS and Linux. PHPMaker's documented authoring environment requires Windows, although applications created with either product can be deployed to a suitable Linux or Windows web server.

Why this matters: Mac and Linux developers can use their existing computers and development environments without maintaining a Windows machine or virtual machine solely for the application builder.

5. Receive a full year of support and upgrades

A PHPRunner purchase includes one year of email support and free upgrades for one year. Customers with an active upgrade period can download new releases issued during that period at no additional cost.

PHPMaker's perpetual license includes email support for the first six months and minor-version upgrades. Major-version upgrades require an upgrade license, except for purchases covered by its stated 60-day major-release policy. A PHPMaker subscription includes support and both minor and major upgrades only while the subscription remains active.

Why this matters: PHPRunner gives a new customer twelve months of support and upgrade coverage from the purchase date, including major releases delivered during that period. That longer included period is particularly relevant when the first application will be developed and refined over many months.

Why choose PHPRunner?

The PHPRunner advantage is the combination. Page Designer handles visual page composition. REST, SQL and Code Views extend the application beyond ordinary database tables. MultiDev supports teams working together. Windows, macOS and Linux builds let developers use their preferred operating system. The included support and upgrade period covers the first full year of the project.

Use the trial with a representative part of your own application: connect its real data, design one page that goes beyond the generated layout, add one business rule and test the result locally.
