Members and guests

Guest Speaker - Community Souls – Rachel Frank
  • 13 flats were directly affected by an electrical fire, and are not particularly accessible. Barnet homes are working to find short and long term requirements. Lady from the council (Zara) who is working on this. Big Grange Local has been working with Community Barnet to support the families affected – Go Fund Me.
  • Check out their social feeds (twitter). Please share it around the community if you can. We will do what we can and talks initially about doing Amazon wish lists.
  • Being led by Helen Shannon – part of Finchley Food Bank. Suggest you get in contact with her if residents can help.
  • Another block didn’t have any water or gas. Early hours of Wednesday morning. 13 flats cannot go back in. Lots of items needed. Temporary accommodation is needed locally if possible.
  • There is a wish list.
  • All Saints’ Church will have a collection on a Sunday – for disasters etc.
  • There is a keen desire to keep the support together, so it’s not all over the place.
  • www.Gofundme.com – The Grange Estate Fire Fund
  • Community Barnet are working with Hope North London – sister organisation to St Barnabus. Central contact for everything – what’s going on, what’s needed, how we can help. Helen Shannon from Hope North London (Reverend) Telephone: 07866 507609.
  • 25 adults are affected and 5 children (unknown ages).
  • N2United will put together a summary and share.
  • People banging on doors really helped it turn out much better than it could. Thankfully nobody was injured. Insurance issues.
  • Brian suggests we put money together at the soiree to make their lives better for Christmas.
  • GoodGym had a WhatsApp chat yesterday – people have been donating clothing etc. They could be there as a team to help with building Ikea furniture.
  • Unveiling and carols with Christmas Tree in EF. Suggestion to collect for those families who have been displaced.

To help our neighbours affected by the fire

--------------------------------------------------------
Guest Speaker – George Nosworthy of Cree, Godfrey & Wood Solicitors
Topic: Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA)
  • LPA refers to a document that gives power to someone of your choice (Attorney), to manage your affairs on your behalf during your lifetime.  Someone you trust implicitly, to act honestly and in your best interests.
  • One area of power is for Health and Welfare management (but only if you are mentally incapacitated), secondly – Property & Financial Affairs (if you are physically and/or mentally incapacitated).
  • Costs £82 and can be used by banks/building societies.
  • Once donor becomes incapable, with a Power of Attorney - that’s the end of it. A Lasting Power of Attorney lasts forever, whether the person is incapable or not.
  • Enduring Power of Attorney – if it was signed before 2008 it isn’t still valid unless registered.
  • Issues or concerns are that it takes away independence. Children cannot use it, but they can still be registered and it put to one side until needed later in life.
  • Complicated application to the court for a deputy to be appointed – if nothing in place.
  • If you want to change the attorney, you have to complete another one.
  • Appoint 2 children, so one is the replacement.  You can have main one and then replacement.
  • You can apply to the court to have someone removed.
  • £82 – it can take a few months to go through.
  • Sign an interim agreement that can work immediately, until the LPA is registered.
  • Advisable to do when making a will. Once you’ve done it, you’ve done it.
  • Tax office/banks – LPA is necessary.
  • LPOA can only take over if they have a copy of the agreement.
  • Living Wills – cover resuscitation requests etc., LST (life-sustaining treatment).
  • You can appoint a solicitor as POA or executor, but if you don’t have to – don’t.
  • Advisable to have both for medical, and financial – doesn’t have to be the same person.
  1. Last formal meeting of 2018
We want to help all enterprises in EF/N2 but also to provide a support structure and everything inbetween. We listen to our members as to what our network should be. A lot of the time we have to guess. To prepare ourselves for 2019, we will be sending out a questionnaire to gain your feedback on how you want us to support your businesses. Tonight is more on the community, as opposed to business. Please look out for the email and complete it ;)  - Remember the password is ‘Soiree’
  1. Say no to single-use plastics
Please get onto to social media and raise awareness. Visit NO2PLASTICS-EASTFINCHLEY on Facebook. Start posting! Or, email No2plastics@gmail.com with comments/ideas/involvement.
Ruth Anders is meeting with 7 volunteers on Monday 19th November, so more news soon!
Suggestion: We could ask Budgens to put a plastic bag bin by the door – so they could re-use.
On the flip side to the campaign: it’s not plastics fault, it’s people. It costs far more to produce paper and other plant based materials.
People need to be logical, but there are so many other things that are single-use plastics. Insulin pen – single use and then thrown away. Medical items aren’t not particularly part of the campaign. The same manufacturers do both. Some form of legislation to limit the way it’s used.
The local campaign is focusing only on bags, cups and straws – that’s it! Aiming to change the mindset of local shopping, i.e. At all locals shops being asked if you have you brought your own bag? Perhaps changes to plastic packs on vegetables.
Campaign team would like to encourage support of shopkeepers working aisle by aisle – little steps. Chipping away to see if we can make a difference. 2.5 of us and a dog, so more volunteers welcome.
  1. Any other business
Christmas Tree update
A lovely expensive Xmas tree for EF has now been confirmed, courtesy of Paul, new owner of Budgens. Thanks Paul!
The Archer Academy Community Choir
Anyone fancy singing for fun on a Tuesday night for 2 hours (term time)? 7pm to 9pm. Great for health and wellbeing. Critical, as might be the last year as expensive to run. £91 per term.
Brian – build of 3rd tower on the corner of the school. Children will be deprived from sunshine. Holy Trinity School. Objections welcome please – go on the website! Restrict the size of the tower block.
GoodGym – always looking for people to join. Meet at The Phoenix on Tuesday night and it’s a great way to get together and meet new people in the community. All abilities. I run a 14 minute mile. Walking group too. Tidying up. 25-30 members (on and off) – come when you can.

Thanks from Octavia - Tarling Road consultation – thank you to everyone for support and feedback. City YMCA are hoping to be awarded the building contract. We would want N2United to help with developing the community café.

Crispy Dog Production video – Nigel Codron worked with Ian Harding of Crispy Dog and the results of a video were stunning! Shot a 1 hour full-length and 3.5min trailer that has gone nationwide. Check out the YouTube clip on the front page of the www.pglm.org.uk

Return invite to Claire Farrier - please come and see us again and tell us more about how the council works. What can we do as residents, and members of the business community to serve us/you better?

Thanks to:
  • George and Rachel for being our guest speakers
  • Clissold Arms for your hospitality and support!
  • Everyone for coming. See you next month for the Christmas Soiree.  Continue to spread the word to other business friends and neighbours.
  • The Archer for their ongoing support.
  • Ruth and Nick for chairing and hosting, and to all other committee members.
Keep connected!
  • Email us at join@n2united.co.uk or meeting@n2united.co.uk
  • Visit our website, although we are in the process of improvements. (Feedback tonight was that there are difficulties in signing up and payment details, and also finding tonight’s meeting times)
  • Check out Facebook group East Finchley Community Group and post on it when you can.
  • N2United ‘no to plastics-east finchley’ – please share your views online too!
  • Like and follow us on all the social media groups – Facebook, Instagram, Twitter
